On Tuesday evening, the café and shop staff were treated to an evening of wine tasting by our lovely supplier, Lea and Sandeman.

Will, chief wine-connoisseur, took us through a selection of wines that are all on sale in the shop and café, pointing out particular flavours and suggestions for pairing the wines with dishes.

White Wine

2016 Picpoul de Pinet Domaine Reine Juliette

  • Grape: 100% Picpoul de Pinet
  • Country: France
  • Region: Langeudoc-Rousillion
  • Reviews: A high acidity wine which is crisp and refreshing. This wine would match being served with seafood, for example Salmon.

  • Grape: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
  • Country: France
  • Region: Loire
  • Reviews: Hints of elderflower, green apple and even asparagus and garden-pea! Well-suited for goats cheese (tried and tested- yum!) and chicken. A really good value wine which comes highly recommended.

2016 TR Sauvignon Blanc Two Rivers of Marlborough

  • Grape: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
  • Country: New Zealand
  • Region: Marlborough
  • Reviews: Hints of passionfruit, apple and gooseberries. Would go well with a creamy sauce dish like pasta or chicken. Has a slight ‘petielence’ (fizz on the tongue) and is a very popular wine.

2016 Pinot Grigio Vallagarina Cantina Valdadige

  • Grape: 100% Pinot Grigio
  • Country: Italy
  • Region: Veneto
  • Reviews: Much fruitier and sweeter than the previous wines, with a strong taste of peardrops! As a dryer wine it would be suited to salad or fish.

Rose WineMIP

2016 MIP (Made in Provence) Classic Rosé Domaine Sainte Lucie

  • Grapes: Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah (all red grapes grown on the foothills of a volcano, they are peeled and then the pigment is bled out of the skin to create the rosé colour)
  • Country: France
  • Region: Provence
  • Reviews: A summer favourite with hints of strawberries and cream. The perfect wine to accompany fish and a firm favourite with the wine-tasters.

Red Wine

2014 Château Belle Garde Bordeaux

  • Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
  • Country: France
  • Region: Bordeaux
  • Reviews: A heavy and rich wine with hints of blackcurrant, graphite, tobacco and leather (smokey flavour). The perfect wine to serve with meat such as beef or lamb. A very sensibly priced but delicious wine.

  • Grapes: Tempranillo
  • Country: Spain
  • Region: Rioja
  • Reviews: A classic rioja asked in an american oak barrel that adds a vanilla and coconut flavour. It’s a sweet and juicy wine which would go well with meat, especially game.

2016 Malbec Penedo Borges

  • Grapes: Malbec; the grapes are grown on the foothills of the Andes at 1050 metres above sea level
  • Country: Argentina
  • Region: Mendoza
  • Reviews: A juicy, smooth and slightly peppery wine. This wine would accompany beef, hard cheese, pasta or would be perfect with a BBQ. Another firm favourite amongst the wine-tasters (especially Farmer Roger!)
