At Peterley we do our utmost to stock as many locally produced and handmade products as possible, supporting small cottage industries and at the same time providing our customers with high quality homemade products not available elsewhere. So when we recently discovered chutney making couple extraordinaire at a local food festival we knew their brand “Jim and Jules Big Adventure”, hand produced at the couple’s home in Cheddington, Bucks, was a must for the farm shop.
Their products include the bestselling “Scrummy apple chutney”, “Onion and Chilli Gubbins” and “Pops Perfect Piccalilli”- not only do they taste fantastic but they also have a lovely story behind them.
In 2008 Jim and Jules were planning to get married but were a little short of funds. Jim’s parent’s have a farm with a huge apple tree, they were away and the apples were going to waste so the couple “borrowed” them. Shortly afterwards Jim had whipped up their first batch of “Scrummy Apple Chutney” and they never looked back. Quickly coming second in a local competition spurred them on and the pair started selling their chutneys at local farmers markets and events. They source their ingredients locally and seasonally, picking blackberries and sloes from the hedgerows and growing tomatoes in their greenhouse. Friends and family also volunteer any surplus fruit and vegetables they have in their own gardens, including quince, damsons, apples, pumpkins and beetroot.
In May 2009 they got married, and while the chutney didn’t pay for the whole wedding, it certainly made a significant contribution!
Jules will be in the farm shop this Saturday 2nd May offering tasters of her wonderful chutneys, so come along have a chat and a nibble and take something rather “scrummy” home with you!
