On Tuesday afternoon Farmer Roger, Brian and Ben were busy strawing up the strawberries ready for the Pick-Your-Own season ahead. Using a straw-spreading machine attached to a tractor, the forklift, some bales of straw (and a very willing Ben equipped with a pitchfork) the men were able to cover the plants up nice and snug.

Why cover Strawberries in straw?

Well other than giving the fruit it’s iconic name, the straw does have some use! It helps lift the fruit up off the ground so if it rains (or should I say when it rains) the fruit is protected from getting covered in mud, rotting or damaged. In addition, the straw allows the fruit to ripen evenly to get that perfect red shine, yum!

When will the Strawberries be ready for PYO?

Unfortunately we can’t guarantee a set date as its dependent on weather but hopefully early June. Keep up-to-date with the PYO availability by checking our website, Facebook, twitter, and instagram. Additionally, ring the shop on 01494 863566 for updates.
